Weather and Fires Bad in Shasta County

It is still happening……After waking last Sunday to neighborhoods filling with smoke, many fire-wary rural north state residents experienced the sinking terror of not knowing whether a blaze was burning miles away or just over the next ridge, roaring toward their homes.

Yet calls to agencies battling the blazes often yielded little or no information, both for members of the public and the press, and for me as I called in for info.

Lines were often busy or rang off the hook at the California Department of Forestry and Fire Protection information center in Redding, and when a spokesperson could be reached, what information he or she had was sparse at best. Very frustrating, but a reality of what is happening in Northern California.
